Why these bobbins are so easy to confuse
Class 15 and 15J bobbins are close enough in appearance that a loose bobbin can seem correct at a glance. Both may be clear plastic. Both may fit within a similar circular footprint. The curve on a 15J is slight, not a dramatic bowl shape.
That visual similarity is exactly why insertion is a poor compatibility test. A bobbin can enter the holder without matching the height, profile, material, or running clearance designed for that machine.
SINGER’s current bobbin guide warns that an incorrect class can contribute to tension problems, skipped stitches, thread jams, and bobbin-case damage. A machine producing a few stitches does not cancel the model requirement.

- A SINGER Class 15J is described as very slightly curved on the top and bottom.
Compare known examples side by side if possible. Do not force a conclusion from one worn, warped, overfilled, or unlabelled bobbin. Thread wound above the rim can hide the profile, while glare through clear plastic can make a flat surface look curved.
The shape is most useful when you already know the loose items came from these two SINGER classes. It is less useful when the box contains mixed brands, generic replacements, vintage metal bobbins, or parts from several machines.
Why a letter J does not prove 15J
The most important naming trap comes from Janome.
Janome’s current bobbin overview calls its standard home-sewing bobbin Class 15 and says the bobbin has an embossed letter J. In that system, the J is a Janome identifier. It does not turn the bobbin into the SINGER class called 15J.
This is why a loose marking should never be interpreted without its manufacturer context. Read the full package, maker, part number, and machine list. If only a single letter remains, return to the machine documentation instead of guessing what the letter means.
Measurements help with sorting, not final approval
SINGER’s current replacement help page lists its transparent Class 15 as 12 mm high and 21 mm in diameter, and its Class 15J as 11 mm high and 20 mm in diameter. Those figures make the intended relationship clear: the 15J is the smaller, slightly curved option in SINGER’s system.
However, that same page pairs the metric figures with inch fractions that do not convert consistently. This guide therefore does not turn those numbers into a universal go or no-go gauge.
A household ruler also lacks the precision needed to settle a very small profile difference. Even calipers only tell you what the loose bobbin measures. They do not prove that its material, flange shape, centre opening, winding notch, or running clearance matches the machine.
Use dimensions to separate a known mixed SINGER set. Use the manual or manufacturer part code to authorize the replacement.
The six-step compatibility check
Follow this sequence before winding a new bobbin:
- Find the full machine model. Read the label on the machine, not a family name from memory.

Keep one empty original in a labelled bag with the machine model and documented part code. Compare the replacement package with the documentation first, then compare the physical bobbin.
Do not assume an old loose bobbin is original simply because it was inside a used machine. A previous owner may have installed the wrong type.
The manual names Class 15 but the spare has a J
Identify the maker before interpreting the J. A Janome Class 15 bobbin may carry that letter as Janome’s mark. A package specifically labelled SINGER Class 15J describes a different class. The single character is not a cross-brand compatibility code.
The seller says Class 15 and 15J are equivalent
Ask for the exact manufacturer part number and a documented model list. If the answer remains generic, do not use the listing to overrule the machine manufacturer.

Stop sewing and unplug the machine before removing the bobbin. Do not continue testing through noise, binding, repeated thread nests, uneven tension, or skipped stitches.
Then:
- Remove the thread and bobbin using the manual’s procedure.
- Check the loose bobbin for the documented class, material, and part code.
- Inspect the bobbin holder for obvious thread or lint without dismantling parts the manual does not make owner-serviceable.
- Install a confirmed correct, undamaged bobbin and rethread from the beginning.
- Test on scrap fabric at a slow speed.

Keep each machine’s spares in a separate compartment or bag labelled with:
- Full machine model
- Bobbin class
- Required material
- Manufacturer part code
- Source or purchase date
Keep one empty confirmed bobbin as a reference. Separate damaged, warped, chipped, or unidentified bobbins from usable stock. Never put a questionable bobbin back into the labelled compartment for later.
