For one all-round pair, compare the two 8-inch options first: the Fiskars 8-inch RazorEdge and the Kai N5210 . The Mundial BP660 has a serrated blade and a listed size of 8.5 inches, the Fiskars 10-inch Easy Action adds a spring-assisted bent handle for long cuts, and the Kai N5210L is a true left-handed pair.

Which kind of scissors to buy, dressmaking shears or quilting scissors, is a separate question, and our guide to quilting scissors vs. dressmaking shears answers it. This page assumes you want one good pair for fabric and compares specific pairs. The two pairs that guide uses as examples, from Ernest Wright and Clover, are not repeated here.

This list compares manufacturer pages and Amazon listing text. We have not cut with any of these pairs, and nothing here ranks cut quality, edge life or comfort.

What a listing can tell you, and what it can’t

A listing can tell you the size, the handle shape, the blade edge and the hand a pair is made for. It cannot tell you how a pair feels after an hour of cutting. So this page sorts the five pairs by the three things the pages actually state:

  1. Listed length. As our guide explains, sewing scissors are often sized by overall length, and the cutting reach is shorter. Kai’s listing gives the size as 8 inches overall length. Fiskars lists 8 and 10 inches without saying whether that is blade or overall length, and Mundial’s page says 8.5 inches without saying either. When long, clean edges matter, look for a cutting-length figure before you buy.
  2. Handle and action. Fixed bent handles, a spring-assisted handle and plain handles do different jobs. The comparison of quilting scissors and dressmaking shears explains why an offset handle helps with table cutting.
  3. Handedness. A pair made for the left hand has its blades and handles arranged for it. A handle shaped for either hand is not the same thing.

Fiskars 8-inch RazorEdge: the mainstream 8-inch pair

Fiskars’ Amazon listing describes premium-grade stainless steel blades with a honed edge, an advanced pivot design and thumb and finger loops with SoftGrip touchpoints. A protective sheath is included. Those are Fiskars’ statements, and the listing does not say whether the pair is for right-handed use only.

If you cut garment patterns and home projects with one pair, 8 inches fits the “medium pair” range our guide suggests for mixed sewing, which it puts at about seven to eight inches overall. View the Fiskars 8-inch RazorEdge on Amazon .

Kai N5210: an 8-inch dressmaking pair from a scissors specialist

The Amazon listing is titled “Kai 5210 8-inch Dressmaking Shears (N5210),” gives the size as 8 inches overall length, and says the pair is made in either Japan or Vietnam. The seller is Kai Scissors. We could not read Kai’s own product page when we checked, so this entry rests on the Amazon listing alone and says no more than the listing does. View the Kai N5210 on Amazon .

Mundial BP660: the serrated 8.5-inch option

Mundial’s own page lists the BP660 as 8.5-inch dress marker shears with serrated stainless steel blades, textured matte black plastic handles and an adjustable screw for blade tension. Mundial’s care note says to keep the pair clean and dry and to add a drop of lubricating oil between the blades and on the screw when needed. Our scissors maintenance guide covers wider care and the limits of home sharpening; one sharpener it discusses excludes serrated blades.

Serration is the feature to weigh. Our guide notes that micro-serrated fabric scissors can reduce fabric movement at the cost of a different edge feel. Mundial’s page says only “serrated,” so treat that as a general point, not a statement about this pair. View the Mundial BP660 on Amazon .

Fiskars 10-inch Easy Action: spring-assisted, for long table cuts

Fiskars’ listing says the spring-assisted handle gently opens the blades after each cut, that the angled handle keeps fabric flat on the work surface, and that the pair suits both right- and left-handed users. The title says the spring assist reduces hand fatigue; that is Fiskars’ claim, and we have no data comparing hand fatigue across pairs.

At 10 inches this is the longest pair here. Our guide notes that pairs around 9 to 10 inches overall are efficient for long cuts on garment panels but heavier and less nimble. View the Fiskars 10-inch Easy Action on Amazon .

Kai N5210L: a true left-handed pair

The listing describes a true left-handed scissor and says it “includes both left handed handle and blades.” Our guide points out that ambidextrous handles do not always give left-handed sewers the same blade visibility and pressure, and recommends a true left-handed blade arrangement when possible. If you are left-handed, compare this pair with the Fiskars 10-inch Easy Action above, which the listing calls ambidextrous. The seller is Kai Scissors. View the Kai N5210L on Amazon .

Match the pair to the cut

If most of your cutting is Compare Why
Pattern pieces from folded yardage on a table Fiskars 10-inch Easy Action, Mundial BP660 Our guide says longer blades cover more distance per stroke; Fiskars says the angled handle keeps fabric flat
Mixed garment and home sewing Fiskars 8-inch RazorEdge, Kai N5210 Our guide’s suggested first purchase is a medium pair, about seven to eight inches overall
Fabric that slides around Mundial BP660 It is the only pair here described as serrated
Left-handed cutting Kai N5210L, Fiskars 10-inch Easy Action A true left-handed pair, or a pair the listing calls ambidextrous
Repeated straight strips A rotary cutter and mat instead See our rotary cutter vs. scissors comparison and the rotary cutter list

What this list leaves out

  • Thread snips and small detail scissors. For quick clipping at the machine, see our thread snips list .
  • Rotary cutters and cutting mats. They solve a different cutting job; see the rotary cutter list above and our list of self-healing cutting mats .
  • Other brands. We did not source maker pages for other scissors brands, including Gingher, so this list does not rank them.

Where to buy

The Fiskars links go to new listings sold by Amazon.com, the Mundial link to a new listing sold by Mundial, Inc., and the two Kai links to new listings sold by Kai Scissors. All five were in stock on October 29, 2026.

Method and limits

This page compares the Mundial USA page and Amazon listing text. It does not test cutting, edge life, comfort or durability, and it does not establish that any pair is better for a given fabric. Only the Mundial pair has a maker page behind it here: Kai’s own site could not be read, and Fiskars’ product pages for these two pairs were not found, so the Fiskars and Kai entries rest on the listings. Where the listing was silent, the table says so.

Questions before buying

What size fabric scissors should a beginner buy?

Our guide suggests a comfortable medium pair, about seven to eight inches overall, for mixed sewing, then checking the actual cutting reach and handle fit. That is a starting point, not a requirement.

Can I cut paper with fabric scissors?

Our guide advises keeping a pair for fabric only. Paper and packaging can wear the edge and leave residue, so mark the handle of the pair you reserve for fabric.

Are left-handed scissors different from ambidextrous ones?

A true left-handed pair has its blades and handles arranged for the left hand, as the Kai N5210L listing describes. A handle shaped for either hand, as the Fiskars 10-inch Easy Action listing describes, is a different design. Our guide recommends a true left-handed blade arrangement when possible.
