Choose the Brother CS7000X if you want speed control, seven one-step buttonhole styles and a bundle that includes a walking foot. Choose the Brother ST371HD if you prefer a mechanical layout with drop feed, a non-stick foot and fewer menus. The “Strong & Tough” name does not give the ST371HD adjustable presser-foot pressure, and neither Brother page publishes a layer capacity you can rely on for thick seams.

A common question is whether the CS7000X is simply the better machine. This page compares what Brother documents for each and leaves the sewing-result question open, because we have not sewn on either one.

Sources: Brother CS7000X and Brother ST371HD , checked October 19, 2026. Brother’s pages do not state every figure in the same way (units are missing for some speeds and weights, and the CS7000X foot count differs between its carton list and its description), so confirm the package you are offered.

Why people compare these two

Both are Brother machines with a one-step buttonhole, a quick-set bobbin and an automatic needle threader. They appeal to the same buyer: someone who wants repairs, hems, garments and light home projects covered by one machine. The differences are in control and bundle, not in a documented difference in what fabric each can handle.

What the CS7000X adds

  • A speed slider. Useful if you want to limit speed on short seams or while learning. It does not guarantee an even start.
  • More buttonhole styles. Seven one-step styles against one.
  • A quilting-oriented bundle. Brother lists a walking foot, quilting foot and a 1/4-inch foot, plus a wide table. See our CS7000X review .

What the ST371HD offers instead

  • Mechanical layout. Dial selection with no menu to learn.
  • A non-stick foot and a spring-action zigzag foot in the box, which the CS7000X bundle does not name.
  • Drop feed listed on Brother’s page, with a free arm.

Our ST371HD review goes through its six feet and limits.

What “Strong & Tough” does not prove

Brother describes the ST371HD as able to sew from lightweight silks through heavier fabrics, but that is a manufacturer statement. It is not a published layer capacity, and the ST371HD has no adjustable presser-foot pressure, no separate speed limiter and no needle-position button. The CS7000X shares the pressure limitation. If you often sew jeans hems or canvas, test the exact folded seam you plan to sew, or compare a model with a pressure dial such as the Singer 4423 .

The ST371HD’s sibling, the Brother ST531HD, adds stitches and a finger guard. Brother’s ST531HD page states it sews through up to six layers of denim, which is a capability claim and not a test result. That comparison is in the Singer 4423 vs ST531HD page .

Bobbins and feet

Both machines use the SA156 bobbin per Brother: the CS7000X manual specifies it, and Brother’s SA156 page lists the ST371HD. For feet, Brother’s SA140 walking foot page lists the ST371HD, while the CS7000X already includes a walking foot. The exact links we could verify are in the “Bobbins and presser feet” sections of the CS7000X and ST371HD reviews.

Where to buy

The CS7000X link goes to an exact, new listing sold by Amazon.com that was in stock on October 19, 2026: Brother CS7000X .

For the ST371HD we use a search link: Search Amazon for Brother ST371HD . The exact ST371HD listing we checked did not show as in stock at the time of writing, and the other ST371HD listings were bundles with extra items, so they are not the same product. Check that any result names the ST371HD, and compare what is included.

Method and limits

This page compares Brother’s published specifications. It does not test feeding, buttonhole quality, noise, durability or reliability, and it does not establish that either machine is better for denim, knits or quilting.

Questions before buying

Is the Brother CS7000X better than the ST371HD?

It has more controls and a larger bundle, including a speed slider and a walking foot. “Better” depends on your projects. The ST371HD’s mechanical layout and non-stick foot may suit you more.

Does the ST371HD have adjustable presser-foot pressure?

No. Brother’s page lists presser-foot pressure as not adjustable. The CS7000X does not adjust it either.

Do they use the same bobbin?

Brother documents SA156 bobbins for both machines. Confirm the part number before buying spares.

The exact ST371HD listing we checked did not show as in stock, and the other listings were bundles. A search lets you compare the current offers and check the model name.
