Choose the Singer 4423 if adjustable presser-foot pressure and a higher listed top speed matter. Choose the Brother ST531HD if a larger stitch selection, a metal finger guard and Brother’s six-layer denim statement matter more. Both are marketed for heavier work, and neither maker publishes the thing a thick-seam sewer really needs: the capacity of your exact folded seam.

This page compares the makers’ own specifications. We have not sewn on either machine and make no claim about denim, canvas or long-session performance.

Sources: SINGER’s 4423 page and the 4423 manual as summarized in our Singer 4423 guide ; Brother’s ST531HD page , checked October 19, 2026. Brother’s page is internally inconsistent on stitch count, so we do not pick a figure for you.

Why the pressure dial is the real dividing line

Presser-foot pressure controls how firmly the foot holds fabric against the feed dogs. A dial lets you ease it for thin or stretchy fabric and increase it for thicker layers. The 4423 documents that control. Brother’s ST531HD page lists adjustable presser-foot pressure as “No,” as do its ST371HD and CS7000X pages.

A pressure dial is a feeding adjustment. It does not raise the machine’s piercing power, and it does not prove a good result on a bulky intersection. It does give you one more setting to try when a fabric feeds badly.

What the ST531HD adds

  • More stitches to choose from, if the headline figure is right for your unit. Count what you will use before paying for them.
  • A metal finger guard, which keeps fingers away from the needle area but does not make unattended sewing appropriate.
  • A non-stick foot, useful for coated or sticky fabric.
  • Brother’s six-layer denim statement. That is a capability claim, not a promise for a hem crossing a thick seam.

Our ST531HD review covers its feet and limits in more detail.

What the 4423 adds

  • Adjustable pressure and a documented drop feed.
  • A faster listed top speed, which is a reason to check how it starts and stops rather than a benefit by itself. It has no separate speed slider.
  • 6.25 inches of needle-to-tower space, which matters when you roll a quilt or a bag through the machine.

Read the Singer 4423 guide for its controls, bobbin and fabric notes.

Bobbins and feet

Singer’s specification for the 4423 calls for transparent Class 15 bobbins, so do not assume a metal or similar-sized bobbin works. The ST531HD is on Brother’s SA156 list and also on the SA140 walking foot list . A Class 15 pack and an SA156 pack are different things, so keep them labeled. Our Class 15 vs 15J guide explains the traps. The exact links we could verify are in the “Bobbins and presser feet” section on the ST531HD review ; for the 4423, Singer’s own nine-piece low-shank foot kit names the 4423 in its listing and is linked from the Singer 4423 guide .

Where to buy

Both links go to new listings sold by Amazon.com that were in stock on October 19, 2026: the SINGER 4423 Heavy Duty in Meltwater Blue and the Brother ST531HD . The 4423 listing is a color variant of the same model and comes with accessories. Confirm the model name, included accessories and seller before ordering.

Method and limits

This page compares manufacturer specifications. It does not test feeding, noise, durability or capacity, and neither the Singer nor the Brother page publishes a layer capacity you can plan around. Test the thickest seam you plan to sew with the needle and thread you will use, and do not force a stalled machine.

Questions before buying

Is the Singer 4423 better than the Brother ST531HD for denim?

Neither maker publishes a layer capacity for your seam. The 4423 has a pressure dial and the ST531HD carries a six-layer denim statement. Test the exact folded seam you plan to sew.

Which has adjustable presser-foot pressure?

The Singer 4423 does. Brother’s ST531HD page lists it as not adjustable.

Do they use the same bobbins?

No. The 4423 uses transparent Class 15 bobbins per Singer. Brother lists the ST531HD for SA156 bobbins. Check your manual before buying spares.

Is the ST531HD stitch count 53 or 37?

Brother’s page states both figures in different places. Count the stitches on the machine’s selector or in its manual instead of relying on one listing.
